Another year over – 2017 and what’s to come.

It has been a busy year. 2016 has flown by; the last couple of months in particular seem to have disappeared in the briefest of flashes. My NaNoWriMo adventure in November was again successful, although I was unable to blog about the latter stages and my ultimate victory due to my website breaking. For the last few weeks I managed to get it to the point whereby visitors could access the site (albeit without any plugins working), and it was only once I was off work for Christmas that I had a chance to sit down and figure out what was wrong, tinker, and finally fix things so I can be writing this post right now. And with that, here are a few updates of what's been going on. The Fire That Scorched The Sky My story for NaNo this year is one that I feel incredibly close to. It's an idea I originally had long ago, an idea that grew and matured...

A Second Path: Getting into Food Writing and Blogging

Alongside my day job, and the writing of a few novels (The Magic of Christmas is progressing well, and a few other things are in the pipeline), one of my big interests has always been food. Writing about food has been a dream that has lurked within the deep corners of my mind for years now. It bubbles up each time the start of autumn brings with it the tempting thought of warmer, comforting meals. Food writing is something I have dabbled in previously, but I have always hit some form of mental barrier whenever I've begun to go anywhere with it. The original purpose of this website and blog was to change my own mindset, to make me think of myself not as 'an aspiring writer', but as 'a writer'. To not think of writing as something I would like to do, but something I actually do. And amazingly, it has worked. I now think of myself as much an author as I do...

NaNoWriMo Update: Day 11

NaNoWriMo Update: Day 11

I've been trying to write for NaNoWriMo this morning. I've churned out 501 words according to Scrivener, although I think they are probably the worst  of my 21,000 so far. So I thought I'd write this blog post instead. 21,000 words! Yes, somehow, over the past 10 days (plus the 40 minutes I've spent this morning) I have cobbled together nearly half of what I need for my novel, and I still have 20 days to go. I'm starting to think I can actually pull this off. I have actually found myself settled with a pretty good writing routine. Every morning I've been getting up an hour earlier than I need to and splurging around 700-900 words. This gets me well on the road towards meeting my daily word target of 1667 before I even leave for work. I then aim for around 1000 when I get back, and so far, this has meant that apart from one day last week, I...

The ‘Books’ Page

So, the page listing what I'm working on is probably the most important thing on this site. These are all ideas that I have planned to various levels, and I'm working on developing many of them further. A couple of points: The ideas may change over time as I develop them further, and I have no idea about when each of these will be written. For 'Exile', I have the book completely planned out for a first draft. I'm writing it now. In my head I see there being a trilogy in this universe - it is the most developed of all of them. I'm also writing a few things for short story competitions. I'll update the page as and when these materialise into anything concrete. Finally, and this really is dependent on time, success with other writing commitments (see point about Exile above), and my level of festive enthusiasm come the latter months of the year, but I may just have something festively themed...
